A wealthy miser dies alone in his observatory, releasing his playful shadow, who plays tricks and pranks aplenty on the denizens of Nowhere. While repairing the roof of the farmhouse, Eustace accidentally hits a loose board, which flies down on Muriel, striking her in the head. She ends up suffering from amnesia, and Eustace uses this opportunity to throw Courage out of the house and convince her that she is a "slave woman" that has to do whatever he wants. Courage calls in the help of Dr. Le Quack, but realizes too late that the latter is a French duck impersonating a doctor and things escalate further from there.
