Laura hesitates to audition to play in the adaptation of "Hélène Keler", a deaf, mute and blind heroine, because she is afraid of not being up to par with Sidonie who is also taking part in it. Madame de Saint-Fiacre reproaches Laura for having acted in another play without her consent and threatens to fire her from her company if she does not get the role of Hélène.
