Sage and Rosemary begin their first day at the academy, with Rosemary impressed. Sage tells her about the Triad, which runs the academy. Both are overjoyed when they meet Parsley, who tells them that Thyme is her roommate. The Triad says each of the students has been chosen for their "exceptional qualities" and that they will be at the academy for three years. All the new students go to an orientation of sorts, having to write their own version of the guardian vows. Sage worries about getting her vows right, with Rosemary and Parsley trying to reassure her, while they walk to ethics class, learning they all have classes at different times...
