Natsume discovers that the heirloom "Book of Friends" that he inherited from his grandmother, Reiko, contains the names of the yökai she had defeated and bound to her will. Assisted by a spirit in the form of a Maneki Neko (lucky cat figure), whom he calls Nyanko-Sensei (lit. "Master Little Meow"), Natsume decides to return all the names to their original owners.
