The eight fugitives barely reach the safe fort while being pursued and fired upon by twenty pirates. At night Jim keeps watch with old Uncle Red. While they are talking, shots are suddenly fired - Uncle Red is fatally wounded. The pirates attack the fort but are repelled at the last second by Captain Smallet and the others. Jim is beside himself with rage and pain at the death of nice Uncle Red. He runs into the jungle with a musket and actually meets the hated John Silver there. Jim threatens to shoot him but can't bring himself to pull the trigger.
