The annual Covention is held at Bonesborough, an event where young witches can learn about covens before choosing one. Luz and Eda come across the Emperor's Coven, the most high-ranked coven and learn that its leader is none other than Eda's sister, Lilith. Luz runs into Amity, who blames her for getting her in trouble at school and mocks Luz's dream of becoming a witch. Out of anger, Luz challenges her to a Witches' Duel. If Luz wins, Amity must admit humans can be witches. If Amity wins, Luz must stop studying magic forever. Amity makes an Everlasting Oath on those conditions...
